Objectives

After working from 3 to 5 years as professionals, our alumni must have demonstrated:

  1. Skills to apply formal methodologies, quantitative models and computer tools so as to understand, propose and offer effective solutions to problems and make decisions within the industry and public / private organizations.
  2. They add value to organizations due to their leadership, their capacity to adjust to new environments, their way of understanding ethical and social components at their work, their efficient performance in groups and their capacity to communicate effectively.
  3. Clarity in their need to learn in a continuous and disciplined way so as to adequately understand scientific and technological changes, new business contexts and changing complexities of our global society.

Study Plan

The Industrial Engineering Study Plan is characterized by its solid components in industrial sciences and mathematical models which are applied due to their systemic approach and high flexibility, which enables students to design their career according to their preferences and strengths. The career´s curriculum consists of: An Education Cycle in Basic Sciences, a Cycle in Comprehensive Education, a Cycle in Engineering Basics, a Cycle in Industrial Engineering Basics, a Professional Cycle and Projects and compliance of language requirements.

The Cycle of Education in Basic Sciences and the Cycle of Engineering Basics, aim at developing in students their capacity to abstract, analyze, reason and perform skills of these disciplines.

The Cycle of Comprehensive Education seeks to educate the individual as a person, citizen and member of society and it consists of: an Uniandes Basic Cycle - CBU, course of Constitution and Democracy and Free Elective Courses - CLE. The Cycle of Industrial Engineering Basics and the Professional Cycle aim at developing in students, competencies and skills so as to use industrial engineering tools in the context of the discipline. Projects seek to integrate knowledge in the solution of problems from the perspective of Industrial Engineering. Besides, with the compliance of some of the student´s requirements, they demonstate proficiency of their mother tongue, their skill to read in English, as well as their mastery of a second foreign language.

Within the Professional Cycle, the program has in-depth areas that are coherent with the research areas of professors from the Department of Operations Research and Statistics, Production and Technology, Organizational Management and Economics and Finances. Students from this cycle define their education according to their areas of interest. Students may take undergraduate Masters Degree courses during their Professional Cycle.

During the Industrial Engineering program at Universidad de Los Andes, activities and processes are carried out so students may achieve the following:

  • Skills to apply their knowledge in mathematics, science and engineering.
  • Skills to design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret data.
  • Skills to design systems, components or processes that satisfy desired needs bearing in mind, real restrictions such as: Economical, social, political, ethical, health and security, manufacturing and sustainability.
  • Skills to work in multidisciplinary work teams.
  • Skills to identify propose and solve engineering issues.
  • Comprehension of ethical and professional responsibilities.
  • Skills to communicate effectively.
  • Education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economical, environmental and social context
  • Acknowledgement of the need to constantly learn throughout life and the necessary skills to do so.
  • Knowledge of contemporary topics.
  • Ability to use modern industrial engineering techniques, skills and tools necessary to carry out engineering practices.

Research or Concentration Areas

Development of research areas and topics is supported by works done by the department´s research groups: TESO research group of Organizational Intervention, Center of Optimization and Applied Probability and PYLO group of Production and Logistics. In the same way, courses in the undergraduate Study Plan for Industrial Engineering circumscribe within the following areas:

  • Operations and Statistics Research: Its objective is to strengthen and explore student´s analysis and synthesis skills, which will be capable of understanding, analyzing and managing quantitative tools by developing a high capacity of mathematical modeling.
  • Production and Technology: Its objective is to build knowledge together with students, enabling them to model productive and logistic processes, by focusing on the points of view of their management, analysis, control and direction.
  • Organizational management: Its objective is to generate and build knowledge to make, design, lead, and participate in understanding (diagnosis), design and change of organizations.
  • Economy and Finances: Its objective is to offer knowledge and modern tools that might be used for modeling complex and changing situations in the financial and economic management environment, both in the business sphere as well as at a world scale.

The theme areas that are currently addressed by the undergraduate program through Industrial Engineering's own tools are:

  1. Mathematical applied models, Optimization and Simulation: Involves education in contents and mathematical modeling tools pertaining to an engineering approach which is guided towards operations research.
  2. Data Engineering, Data Mining and Information Management: Involves skills development and learning of tools so as to manage high volumes of information since the statistical modeling.
  3. Financial Engineering: Takes into account modeling and tool application pertaining to industrial engineering so as to make decisions that are of economic and financial nature within organizations.
  4. Business Creation, Organizational Strategy and Business Management: Involves modeling and engineering design in organizations, by using tools such as: Systemic Thinking, Complexity Theory, Soft Systems Thinking, Organizational Cybernetics, and Critical Systems Thinking, among others.
  5. Decision Analysis, Risk Evaluation and Negotiation: Includes engineering modeling and design applied to decision making processes in organizations of diverse levels, considering complex factors as risk, and the inclusion of different positions regarding decision alternatives.
  6. Production Engineering, Production Planning, Production Management, Logístics and Quality: Involves development of skills and knowledge of tools that are associated with engineering modeling and design applied to production systems as well as activities associated with the supply chain.
  7. Health Systems: Takes into account, the engineering work that can be performed within the health system scope, both at an organizational level as well as activities related to medical diagnosis.
  8. Product Development Engineering, Innovation and Marketing Engineering: Takes into account the engineering work that can be carried out so as to generate innovative solutions related to products, production systems and markets.
  9. Design of Social and Public Systems: Takes into account the engineering work within a public management context and the technical work developed within government institutions using Industrial Engineering´s own tools.
  10. Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology: Seeks to venture into state of the art contents where it is possible to create new businesses and alternatives so as to develop the discipline during the following years.
  11. Project Management: Application of tools and contents of Industrial Engineering to project management and development at different levels of complexity, even including megaprojects.

Alumni Profile

The Industrial Engineering Program aims at educating professionals in engineering who are capable of confronting any type of issues related to business management including financial, adminstrative, production and operative areas, enabling them to work in fields of diverse nature. This program educates professionals so as to have a decision making capacity, capable of contributing to the country´s development, who work at companies from the public/private sectors or who create their own business, in any of the areas of the organization; they particularly stand out for having strength in the financial area, at organizational management, production and applied mathematics.
