IELE-3106 Power Electronics

This course aims at providing analysis and design tools for energy conversion systems which are based on electronic devices applied in the speed control of motors, switching power sources, reactive and harmonic reduction, UPS, FACTS, among others. Concepts of power quality are presented in order to allow the students to obtain a practical point of view of the applications of this course in the professional practice. The growth of semiconductor devices with higher energy handling capabilities poses a specific application reference in the conversion energy systems design with a higher level of complexity and automation, which implies the optimization of: industrial processes, energetic regulation and power quality related problems. Nowadays is common the use of FACTS devices (Flexible AC Transmission System), HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current), ASCD (Automatic Speed Control Device), UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and harmonic active filters, among other elements. Industry requires engineers with the appropriate criteria in design, selecting and maintenance of power electronic devices.,English,-

IELE-3134 Distribution systems

This course concentrates on the planning, analysis and design of power distribution systems . It includes a presentation of basic concepts in distribution systems (equipment, typologies, primary and secondary network concepts) and characterization of electric demand. Distribution systems analysis tools (radial charge flow and short circuit analysis) are then introduced, together with the development of such systems’ protections coordination. Topics related to distribution systems planning are then addressed, starting with the forecast of electricity demand, and continuing with the philosophy of planning and analyzing the reliability of distribution systems. Sub-optimal problems are studied. It concludes with an overview of the regulatory and tariff framework for electricity distribution in Colombia.
