Objectives

According to the mission of the Department, the Architecture program is committed to the teaching of discipline with high social responsibility, demanding excellence training on the various areas that make up the production of Architecture and the City.

The spirit of this education is framed in an autonomous, independent environment, plural and diverse, where dialogue, debate and criticism headed to profitable exchange among diverse community members. Creativity, responsibility and autonomy of the students in their education are evidenced in the highly elective and inter-disciplinary character of the Study Plan.

Class contents are directed to build a firm disciplinary education within a specific national context, being committed to the country’s situation, particularly to the city of Bogota.

The program is closely linked to other universities, both in the country and abroad, organizing periodical events, namely forums, lectures, and international architecture workshops, which ensure a permanent criticism process, self-assessment and updating for all members of this community.

Furthermore, the Department is committed to research themes relative to training in Architecture, carrying out experimental projects and seeking innovating and adequate methods for teaching and learning of Architecture and the City within various contemporary social contexts.

Study Plan

The Study Plan is made up of four areas (Knowledge), own disciplines (Projects, History, Theory and Criticism, Technique and the

City), other than the group of mandatory subjects of an institutional type, and structured in three cycles (teaching methods):

Basic Cycle (1st and 2nd Semester)

Its aim is to provide students with a comprehensive exposure to Architecture and the City, based on observation, measurement, analysis and representation of significant buildings.

The teaching method implies theoretical and practical activities, based on workshop activities. The classes are of a mandatory nature.

Training Cycle (3rd, 4th and 5th Semesters)

It is aimed at providing the student with in-depth understanding as a discipline.

Classes are organized in four theme areas:

  • Project
  • History, Theory and Criticism
  • Technique
  • City

The teaching method seeks to ensure conveying of specific knowledge in each area, by combining lecture classes and workshops.

Classes are of a mandatory nature.

Proposing Cycle (6th. 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Semester)

It is aimed at propitiating a critical, proposing attitude among the students, which at the same time enables them to propose comprehensive solutions and alternatives with respect to Architecture and the City. Students may concentrate on discipline areas (knowledge) of their interest. The teaching method promotes research and debate through seminars, laboratories and lecture classes. Courses are elective.

Students may also take dual programs, options, concentration in the disciplines of their interest, and student exchange with national and international universities. The Study Plan Plan ensures fundamental contact with other academic units through the courses of the Basic Uniandino Cycle and the possibility of taking some of the elective courses in other programs.

For decision making purposes, students are supported by the Academic Counseling, headed by the Department’s full time professors. Similarly, they are actively involved in the Monitoring project, supporting strategic areas of the Department, such as the Publications Workshop, the Research Groups, the documentation Center, and the permanent exhibitions program.

Annually, the Department organizes lectures with international guests, permanent fora, summer courses for university and high school students (Diseñando), continued education programs, and the Cartagena International Workshop. Lastly, pursuant to University guidelines, as regards the internationalization of the Architecture program, there are several agreements in place with different universities, where the students can attend as exchange or visitor students.
