Objectives

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering strives to provide students with a solid conceptual education as to the basic topics of physical sciences and their technical application in solving problems. The program strengthens the student's ability to assume the updating process indispensable to his/her future professional development. This is complemented with a wide humanistic training that allows understanding and committing to society. The alumni is expected to contribute to the country's development by providing innovative inputs based on sustainable growth.

The educational Objectives of the Environmental Engineering Program match those of the ABET accreditation. ABET is a recognized accreditor for college and university programs in engineering, technology, computer and applied science. The ABET accreditation guarantees that the university meets the education quality standards for a specific program, and enables a systematic and permanent mechanism to conduct assessments and ensure continuous improvements to education quality. The educational Objectives of the Environmental Engineering program are described below. The alumni of the Environmental Engineering Program are expected to:

  1. Have the ability to apply basic sciences and engineering by clearly understanding his/her ethical, social and professional responsibility to serve successfully in positions of environmental engineering and/or development and research.
  2. Lead, foresee, identify, develop and control projects to mitigate and control the contamination of natural resources (water, air and soil) produced by human activities and natural causes, aiming at improving the living standards of our society.
  3. Conduct research and be willing to acquire advance knowledge that allows reaching a remarkable performance as professionals in multidisciplinary working teams.

Areas of Research or Concentration

Contamination Control

  1. Water quality. The main problems associated with human health are water contamination and drinking water purification. This includes topics such as Water Chemistry, Systems of biological and physicochemical treatments.

  2. Aquifers and contaminated soils. Migration of contaminants in the subsoil, impact prediction models and restoration technologies, involving physical, chemical and biological techniques.

  3. Meteorology and atmospheric contamination. It is concerned with studying the behavior of air and contaminants to predict the impacts of the processes involved in their production and determine the necessary treatment. It also approaches the design and construction of treatment systems.

  4. Solid Waste. It is concerned with the study of waste production, collection, transport, processing and final disposal, and the processes involved in water and air contamination.

Environmental Modeling

It deals with predicting the water, air and soil conditions generated by various human activities, with the aim of determining their environmental impact. Managing environmental models is of the essence for Environmental Impact Assessments, thereby, they could be grouped along one area. Similarly, it includes computer techniques that allow students to manage different information levels (SIG in Spanish) geographically.

Environmental Management

The management area intends to develop and integrate analysis procedures and methodologies that allow involving environmental variables in the assessment of alternatives and the control of environmental side effects. It refers to the activities to be undertaken by the industry and society in general to reduce environmental impacts. This includes environmental management systems (ISO 14000, etc.), methodologies for environmental impact assessment, principles of environmental legislation, cleaner technologies and contamination prevention audits.
