Objectives

To form academists who will be competent to pursue graduate studies to initiate themselves on research related to pure and applied mathematics, or specializing on areas requested by the entrepreneurial sector.

To train professionals capable of applying mathematics at State-owned and private enterprises. To train professors who would later teach Mathematics at universities and other higher and technical education institutions in the country.

Study Plan

The syllabus is made up of 66 credits corresponding to compulsory professional courses (calculus, algebra, analysis and probability) that represent the core of the career; 47 non-professional credits including courses on physics, programming, humanities and social sciences intended to provide the students with comprehensive training; and 15 credits in Mathematics that will allow them to concentrate in their area of interest. Furthermore, the students must fulfill the requirements established by the University with respect to proficiency in the Spanish language, knowledge of a foreign language and of the Colombian constitution. The total number of credits is 128 or 131 (depending on the proficiency in Spanish) and the average duration of the program is 8 semesters.

As to the non-professional credits, 15 must be concentrated on a minor area chosen by the students which allows them to learn the fundamentals of another discipline. The election of the minor area will be subject to the Department's approval among the alternatives that include any degree on engineering, statistics and operational research, computer science, biology, economics, psychology, physics, philosophy, among others.

The students from other disciplines, who have high grade averages in subjects related to mathematics studied in the University, will have the option of taking the double program on Mathematics by processing their request directly from the Admissions and Registration Web page.

The University grants some scholarships to outstanding students, and the Mathematics department, through the Professor Yerly's Fund, offers limited financial assistance to "those who may need it and deserve it", as stated on his will.

Alumni Profile

Most Mathematicians graduated from the Universidad de los Andes have successfully managed to pursue graduate studies. After that, some have joined national universities or unviersities abroad, either teaching or conducting research in Mathematics and its applications. Others work for consulting firms, insurance companies, national and international financial entities, applying their knowledge in mathematics and computer sciences.

Our alumnae are distributed in the three fields as follows: one third is conducting Doctoral Programs, d third teaches at university level, and the remaining third works in the industrial field. In the future, Colombia will require a larger number of Mathematicians with a comprehensive knowledge on the applicability of what is fairly called "the Queen of Sciences".
