HIST-3207 Seminario Cultura Barroca en la Nueva Granada
More than an artistic expression, the Baroque movement was a cultural experience that emerged in 16th century Europe during the Catholic Reform. Characterized by the external manifestation of its art forms and public manifestations of feelings, it was the basis of expressive theatricality in daily life, whose main objective was to impact the senses and create sensations. This historical experience was most notably reflected in representations of the human body. This seminar will address the following issue: What were the general characteristics of Baroque culture and in what way was the human body portrayed in it? These matters will be studied in different Baroque fields of the 17th and 18th centuries, based on which an analysis will be carried out regarding the cultural value of the models of corporality, the characteristics of popular piety, devotions and in general, the discourse that governed behavior.
