The general purpose of the Doctorate in Administration is to train people who are competent in research. In doing so, it aims to contribute to the development of knowledge in administration and to stimulate the country's research capacity on the reality of administration and management of Colombian and Latin American organizations.
The Doctorate in Administration from the University of the Andes is distinguished by several factors:
Applicant Profile
Applicants to the PhD in Administration program must:
- Have a university degree. It is not essential to have previous postgraduate studies or work experience.
- Demonstrate academic excellence, motivation to learn and to advance research processes related to the Faculty's lines of research.
- Demonstrate competence to understand and communicate in an academic context.
- Have an intermediate knowledge of English that allows you to understand academic texts.
- Have full-time availability for your studies.
Objectives
The Doctorate in Administration is a research program in management that ultimately aims to contribute to the development of the disciplinary field and strengthen management in the country, with organizations as its object of study.
Specific objectives:
- Students will acquire research skills under the principles of integrity and responsibility .
- Students will have the ability to design and develop research autonomously.
- They will be effective and assertive communicators in academic and research contexts.
- Students will have the ability to understand, apply and teach knowledge within their area.
Study Plan
The program is offered annually with admission in the second semester in the full-time face-to-face modality. The curriculum is developed in four thematic axes and individual tests:
Fundamentals of Administration and Research Design (8 credits)
The core of the program provides students with the theoretical foundations of administration, while also providing an overview of how scientific knowledge has been and is generated. It is proposed that 2 compulsory courses be offered, for example:
- Management Fundamentals and Great Thinkers
- Organizational Theory
Research design axis (13 credits)
This track will consist of 2 or 3 compulsory courses and a research assistantship in which the student will have a research experience before presenting his/her dissertation proposal. These courses may be:
- Logic of Social Sciences
- Research Design I
- Research Design II
- Research assistance which will allow the student to participate in a research project of one of the faculty professors, preferably his/her thesis director.
Professional or in-depth axis (between 12 and 24 credits)
The professional or in-depth axis will be composed of seminars that will be identified by the student's thesis director in accordance with the student's previous training and training needs. These courses may be taken from the University's course offering or will be designed under the modality of directed readings.
If the student takes less than 24 credits, the missing credits are transferred to the Research Development axis.
Research Development Axis (between 42 and 54 credits)
It is during this period that the student will develop his/her research. Prior to this module, the candidate must pass the comprehensive exams and the dissertation proposal. The research development module will consist of the doctoral thesis credits and international internship.
- The doctoral thesis is the individual work space in which the student, accompanied by his or her thesis director, will develop his or her doctoral work.
- The international internship will last a minimum of 16 weeks.
Individual Academic Tests
To validate the progress that the student is making in research and in his training as a researcher, there are individual academic tests composed of comprehensive exams, the dissertation proposal, the first article and the dissertation.
- Comprehensive exams: the purpose of the exams is to assess the fundamental and professional knowledge acquired by the student, as well as his or her ability to pose and justify research questions and propose solutions to them.
- Dissertation proposal: composed of a written document and an oral presentation that will be evaluated by a jury and by the candidate's advisory committee.
- First article: This exercise is intended to help students develop research communication skills and is proposed to be done as early as possible, even before comprehensive exams.
- Dissertation: Like the proposal, the dissertation is composed of a written document and an oral presentation and is governed by the provisions of the Doctoral Student Regulations.
Among the activities of the doctorate, in addition to the courses, there are:
- Attendance at faculty research seminars: Research groups and departments of the faculty are constantly organizing research seminars. PhD students are invited to these seminars and have a space to share their ideas and research progress.
- Research progress presentations: students who use the funds to support the presentation of papers at conferences present their work to their peers, with the aim of receiving feedback on the form and content of the presentation. The possibility of presenting is not exclusive to those who use the Faculty's funds; any student can do so.
- Preparation for proposal and dissertation presentation: Students who are about to present their proposal or dissertation do several rehearsals in front of the students, to receive feedback and to prepare for time management. Faculty professors are also invited to these presentations.
- Training in English communication skills through IPD courses, English for PhDs.

Alumni Profile
