LENG 3104 Corpus-Based: Language Analysis

This seminar introduces students to the use of corpora for the analysis of language and discourse. Through the study of available English language corpora and corpus tools, students will learn key concepts and methods for the understanding of natural language use in communicative contexts. In addition to CL concepts and methods, students will explore how CL methods have been used in areas such as sociolinguistics, stylistics, critical discourse analysis, academic English, forensic linguistics, pragmatics and others. The seminar will also focus on aspects in the selection, compilation, and annotation of corpora; the analysis of written and spoken language; the implementation of qualitative and quantitative analyses; and some types of analysis that can be carried out with corpus techniques
