This master's degree provides a space for the study, development and preservation of classical studies, a space that is so far unique in Colombia. In addition, it also sponsors the research, projects and studies that have been produced in this field with the training of new researchers and the incorporation of new disciplines and methodologies to those already established in the area.

Objectives

LINGUISTIC OR TRANSLINGUISTIC:

  • Recognize and transpose semantic patterns, syntactic structures and constructive features common to most European languages (Greek, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese).
  • Evaluate different writing styles, as well as their communicative potential and limitations.
  • Use the language of the area accurately according to their communicative purposes and being sensitive to the disciplinary and cultural contexts of their interlocutors.
  • Produce or evaluate new versions and interpretations of the classics that can dialogue with the knowledge, questions and needs of their time.

COMMUNICATIVE:

  • Reading by identifying nuances and different levels of meaning.
  • Listen respectfully and critically.
  • Present and debate arguments.
  • Write clearly and efficiently.
  • To persuade, that is, to understand and use the sociocultural context of your interlocutor to communicate with him/her by resorting to what is shared as members of the same group.
  • Reading in search of the arcane meaning of the texts with the aim of contrasting it with its current meaning.

RESEARCHERS:

  • Reason logically to solve a problem by paying attention to what is essential and discarding what is irrelevant.
  • Collect, organize and compile large amounts of information of various kinds (for example, philological, literary, philosophical, iconographic, etc.).
  • Appreciate the relevance of the details and the characteristics of each cultural manifestation, be it linguistic, literary, artistic, philosophical, etc.

DISCIPLINARY:

  • Critically appropriate the main classical studies and the conceptual tools provided by criticism and the theory linked to them.
  • Synthesize the acquired approaches and choose concepts, methodologies and questions appropriate to the proposed study.
  • Use some of the methods of classical studies.
  • Blurring disciplinary boundaries and finding new approaches, methods, concepts, questions, etc.
  • Evaluate the approach of the discipline in which you were trained or with which you have the greatest affinity from a critical and reflective attitude.

INTERDISCIPLINARY:

  • Solve complex problems that require a global perspective through integration and interaction across various disciplines, considering each of them on equal terms.
  • Have a spectrum of knowledge, perspectives, methods and research interests.
  • Become familiar with several disciplines to the point that you can identify links between them.
  • Communicating across academic domains and cultures.
  • Empathize with dissimilar and even seemingly incommensurable points of view.

Applicant Profile

The Master of Classical Studies is an ideal graduate program for any individual with an undergraduate degree who is interested in the classical or medieval world regardless of their discipline of origin or professional experience.

It is essential that the candidate has a humanistic character, that is, that he or she considers that the resolution of cultural and social problems is enriched by the study of the legacy of Antiquity. In this sense, the master's degree may include, for example, philologists, writers, historians, philosophers and art historians. It is for people from very different disciplines who are willing to expand the horizons of their field of work by blurring the boundaries between one speciality and another.

The program has 36 credits arranged to be taken in 3 semesters ideally, distributed as follows:

  • A compulsory interdisciplinary seminar (4 credits)
  • 3 thematic seminars (12 credits)
  • 2 elective seminars (8 credits)
  • 1 research guide seminar (4 credits)
  • Master's thesis (8 credits)

Alumni Profile

Graduates of the Master of Classical Studies from the Universidad de los Andes are professionals capable of addressing problems and issues in the Greco-Roman world in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary manner; that is, they can use the perspectives and methods of the different disciplines that make up the master's program and take a position on these problems with a critical spirit and pluralistic criteria. This graduate has a humanistic attitude that allows him to discover the vitality of the Greco-Roman and medieval legacy and relate it to contemporary concerns and problems, as well as actively participate in his own intellectual and social sphere through his humanistic sensitivity and his ability to illuminate problems from various disciplinary approaches, thus becoming an agent of social transformation through cultural management.
