Humanities and Literature Department

In 1948, with the founding of the Universidad de los Andes, the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters was born, to open a space for the formation of critical thinking and aesthetic sensitivity. The undergraduate program of this Faculty had two emphases: Philosophy and Literature. In 1983, the Faculty of Philosophy was transformed into the Department of Philosophy and Letters and was integrated into the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. By decree of the ICFES, the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy and Letters was changed to that of Philosopher, which was also awarded to Literature students. In 1995, the Board of Directors approved the separation of the degrees of Philosopher and Literature, which led to the creation of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, in 1997. Its main characteristic is to integrate the fields of creativity: Art, Music and Literature. Thus, literary studies are combined with humanities to form the Department of Humanities and Literature.

The Department currently offers three programs: the Undergraduate Program, the Master's Program, and, since August 2012, the Doctorate in Literature. The Department hopes to be clearly recognized in the literary academy for the quality of its faculty, students, and graduates, as well as for its commitment to the development of literary studies in Colombia and internationally. The objectives include: 1) sustained work as a leader in the networks of researchers who form groups and discuss policies to encourage and disseminate research in the area; 2) increasing the number of publications, including a Department journal; 3) strengthening the Master's and Doctorate programs in Literature. The sustained incorporation of high-level professors and students and the training of professionals, whose performance makes the quality of the programs evident to the external sector, contribute to the constant improvement of the Department and its academic environment.
