Objectives
General objectives
- To train high-level researchers capable of generating, transferring and using knowledge from the field of literary studies in areas relevant to the country and to Latin America.
- Contribute to the consolidation of an academic community committed to research in literature and in dialogue with other disciplines.
- To encourage the exchange of research experiences in the area of literary studies at national and international levels.
- To offer national and international undergraduate and master's students the opportunity to continue advanced level studies in literature.
Specific objectives
- To train doctors in literature whose skills, attitudes, motivations and capabilities promote a social atmosphere favorable to the progress of the discipline.
- To promote the development of autonomous theoretical and critical thinking that allows students and teachers to access new knowledge proposals in literature.
- Expand academic and research exchange with the national and international community, as well as the commitment to the generation, transfer and appropriation of knowledge.
Study Plan
The program is offered in a full-time, on-campus format. Its objective is to train researchers capable of independently making and directing contributions to the advancement of the discipline that are recognized by the national and international academic community.
It is made up of theoretical and monographic seminars equivalent to those offered for the Master's Program in Literature.
Duration: three semesters.
- Second Phase (Transition)
In the first semester, students take theoretical and monographic seminars offered by the Doctoral Program in Literature and by other doctoral programs of the University or other institutions with which there is an agreement. These courses are chosen based on their relevance to the research project.
In the second semester, the research project is prepared and the comprehensive knowledge and second foreign language exam is presented.
The culmination of this phase is the presentation and defense of the research project.
Duration: two semesters.
- Third Phase (Investigation)
At this stage, the development of the research takes place.
It begins with an internship that allows the student to explore other academic resources appropriate for his or her research at a relevant institution.
In the final year, the student devotes himself to writing the thesis, a work that culminates with its defense before a jury.
Duration: three semesters.
This space will be the meeting point where students, professors, researchers and guests will be able to share their proposals, progress and results of their projects. Students will find there the opportunity to learn about the lines and research projects that are being developed in the Department, to have contact with the invited researchers and to consider their own work. This colloquium will meet at least twice each semester and its organization will be the responsibility of the Graduate Director. Students will not receive credit for their participation in the colloquium; however, all graduate students must attend regularly.

Alumni Profile
The PhD in Literature trains researchers and teachers in the discipline of literary studies, especially prepared for the academic field of higher education and for academic production.
The graduate's occupational profile is related to two large areas: academia (universities, research institutes) and cultural institutions.
The graduate will be able to:
- Recognize the diverse literary traditions (Hispanic and non-Hispanic) in a broad historical, geographical and cultural spectrum.
- Carry out a critical appropriation of the concepts of literary discipline and the conceptual tools of theory and criticism.
- Conduct and direct research in the area of his/her doctoral training.
- Produce own knowledge on problems of academic interest, achieving validation of this knowledge by international research communities and guiding its application in the country.
- Form and lead research groups both nationally and internationally.
- Formulate research projects independently and creatively and develop them in accordance with the methodologies of the discipline.
- Interact with other colleagues at various levels of academic participation to influence theoretical and critical formulations of the development of the literary discipline.
- Develop critical, ethical, creative and interdisciplinary thinking.
- To understand the career prospects of the profession and explore them during the course of their studies.
- Participate in and influence the educational and cultural environment of the country through research projects, publications, participation in conferences, etc.
