MEDI 2011 How to Live Longer and Better: Cardiovascular Prevention in the XXI Century

Who doesn´t know a family member, a friend, a classmate, a coworker who had a heart attack or a stroke? The common nature of these events doesn´t make them any less deadly or scary.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) (coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and others) are the leading cause of death in Colombia, Latin America and the world. Scientific advances that took place in the 2oth century allowed us to discover the mechanisms that lead to CVD, and with them the risk factors that determine its development and progression.
Fortunately, most risk factors for CVD are modifiable, so that CVD is for the most part a preventable disease. However, health professionals and the public don´t always have the necessary knowledge or awareness to make informed decisions. Additionally, we are frequently exposed to inaccurate or overly false information about CVD prevention. Further, not only personal choices matter, the battle against CVD requires political commitment, measurement of reliable indicators and opportune and
decided action by government authorities.
This course is meant to facilitate in its participants the development of healthy habits against CVD in their personal life, and to provide them with the tools to spread this knowledge. This will convert them into agents for positive change in their circles, and hopefully in advocates of healthier habits and a longer, happier life.
