PSIC 3892 Beyond Cbt: Third-Wave Therapies, Systemic Skills, and What Works for Whom

This course provides an introduction to a range of evidence-based therapies that can reduce psychological distress. We explore the different theories that underpin each therapy, and learn the key techniques for each therapy.

Firstly, this course introduces "third-wave" or "third-generation therapies". This is a group of recently-developed therapies which includes mindfulness, acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT) and schema therapy.

The course will also introduce students to principles of systemic therapy, such as narrative therapy. Although traditionally used for family therapy, this course focuses on how these can be applied in therapy with individual patients to enhance results.

With so many therapies out there, it can be overwhelming for psychologists to know what is best for their patient. A key theme in this course will be to learn when third-wave or systemic approaches are recommended, and when we should use traditional cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Students will learn to analyse the evidence for a particular therapy in order to decide whether it is suitable for their patient.
