PSIC3892 Beyond Cbt: Third-Wave Therapies, Systemic Skills, and What Works for Whom

This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of the following "Third-wave" or "Third-generation therapies" : mindfulness, ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy), CFT (Compassion Focused Therapy) and Schema therapy. The course will also introduce students to principles of systemic therapy. Although traditionally used for family therapy, this course focuses on how these principles are applied in individual therapy in order to engage challenging patients (e.g. those who have negative beliefs about therapy). With so many therapies out there, it can be overwhelming for psychologists to know what is best for their client. A key theme in this course will be to learn when third-wave or systemic approaches are recommended, and when we should use traditional CBT. Students will also develop skills at analyzing the evidence for a particular therapy in order to decide whether it is suitable for their patient.
