CBCA1252 Music As Social Life: Ethnomusicological Perspectives On Musics of the World
We sometimes think of music as just sounds, digital information that can be shared, bought and sold, or even as written notes on a score. In this course, we will go beyond these trends by thinking of music as social interaction. Through recordings, demonstrations and ethnographies, we will consider musical practices from different cultural groups around the world in terms of what participants achieve through music-making. The sounds remain important, but they are only part of a rich set of significant interactions through which people make their societies and cultural traits real. We will also reflect on our own musical social lives and those of people around us, applying and critically evaluating models of analysis from the field of ethnomusicology.
