CPOL2155 Social Media, Misinformation, and Politics
Fake news and misinformation have been at the forefronts of popular and scientific interest since 2015. This interest has mostly been fuelled by politics. This course seeks to give a multidisciplinary overview on current debates on fake news, social media, and politics. After covering some basic questions on lying and deception, the course would focus on the larger picture of when do people believe fake news, to what extent does social media foster the spread of dishonest content, what effect do disinformation campaigns may or may not have on our democratic processes, and what sort of institutional and grassroot solutions have been considered to combat the spread of fake news.
