BCOM4101 Filogenomica
This course will introduce students to the theory and methods of phylogenetic systematics with a strong emphasis on molecular phylogenetic systematics. Because of the short format of the course, we will have to emphasize practical applications over philosophical debates in phylogenetics. Our goal is to get students ‘up to speed’ on the basic concepts of molecular phylogenetics in order to understand a few of the current approaches to phylogenomics.
The course will not delve much into bioinformatics tools as there are other courses focused strictly on how to manipulate large datasets, but we will cover the minimum necessary to perform required phylogenetic analyses. We will emphasize tools that are free and open, and not limited to either Mac or Windows. Many phylogenetic analyses can be accomplished in R. Many computer-intensive methods are available publicly on web servers. More specific and demanding tools we will run on the UniAndes cluster.
