HART2131 Nineteenth-Century American Art

This course proposes an introductory, thematic and critical approach to 19th-century art in the United States. Students will study topics like the construction of the American landscape and ideas of national identity, gender and race through individual artists,contexts, works of art and a preliminary approach to visual culture. By looking at specific examples and case-studies of portraiture, history painting, genre painting, expansion to the West, the Civil War, the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, amongst others, students will learn about art produced in this territory during a long 19th-century that begins with the American Revolution and ends with Impressionism and the Gilded Age.
