Basic Cycle
The purpose of the basic cycle is to prepare students for an English-language academic environment and to be able to read academic texts, which are required in their university classes. Successful completion of the basic cycle fulfills the
university’s English reading requirement, and prepares students to take Cursos I.

 

Course Overview

English 01 is the second course of the integrated-skills basic cycle of the Academic English Support Program (AESP). This course focuses on the development of basic skills in English for effective communication in general and academic contexts at an A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The course emphasizes on the development of reading skills of everyday and academic texts for learners to complete academic and professional tasks in English in an effective manner. English 01 prepares students to effectively discuss aspects of their routines, background, context, and matters in areas of immediate need in simple terms by using the task-based language learning approach to understand texts, speeches, graphs, and diagrams related to academic and everyday matters, and to convey relevant information contained in clearly structured, short, simple, informational texts. Besides, the course promotes the gradual acquisition of critical thinking skills and the use of strategies for long-lasting, autonomous language learning. 
 
The extent to which the language skills will be developed corresponds to the following exit levels as per the Common European Framework of Reference:
Reading: A2+
Listening: A2
Speaking: A2
Writing: A2
Grammar: A2
