Course Description

English 8 is the second skills-focused course of the Intermediate-Advanced Cycle in the Academic Purposes Support Program (AESP). Specifically, this course is a workshop-style intermediate writing course designed to assist students in developing language proficiency, language strategies, and basic principles of academic writing in English. Students will learn process writing to allow them to plan, edit, reflect upon, and revise sentences, paragraphs and essays with increasing confidence and independence. At the same time, students will progress toward more accurate, more advanced, and pragmatically appropriate use of English grammar and vocabulary, particularly for academic writing.

Course goal

After successfully completing this course on introductory academic writing, students canwrite a variety of sentence types, listing-order paragraphs, comparison-contrast paragraphs, and  argumentative essays. These paragraphs and essays feature well-developed supporting details and effective organization and cohesion.

 

By the end of the course, students are expected to achieve the following proficiency levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
